What are art institutions, museums and exhibitions for?
Workshop with Charles Esche
The day workshop provides some material and lead a collective discussion about expectations on and the purpose of art institutions approaching the mid-21st century. What should their role be in contemporary culture and society? What should artists, curators as agents and visitors expect of them? What place to they have in a sustainable artistic ecosystem? Together, we will try to unpack these questions and decide what we think needs to be retained, changed, reinvented, or abolished in the years ahead.
The workshop will be led by Professor Charles Esche who has 25 years of experience as a curator and museum director. He will introduce relevant aspects of his curatorial practice, tracing the changes in art institutions over 25 years, looking at biennales he curated such as Gwangju, Istanbul, São Paulo and Jakarta as well as his work at Van Abbemuseum in the Netherlands and the old Rooseum in Malmö. The workshop will be interesting to artists, art writers and curators who are thinking about having a relationship with art institutions as exhibitors, employees, or freelancers.
