Simian - With and Without

PASS Experimental Publication: A Spatial Iteration in an Ongoing Publication Process

Simian – With and Without is part of PASS Experimental Publication, a series that engages with visual and spatial modes of editing through which ideas can be tested and made public in different forms.

Through a one-day Deep Publishing session, Simian, an exhibition space run by artists Markus von Platen, Christian Vindelev, Jan S. Hansen and Toke Flyvholm, turned its gaze inward, tracing its trajectory and origins through referential images collected by its directors themselves. In conversation with invited guests Anna Gritz, Director of Haus am Waldsee; artists Christian Vind and Honza Hoeck; Evelyn Raudsepp, curator at EKKM; and Karin Bähler Lavér, Artistic Director of Skēnē the workshop explored Simian’s past, present, and possible futures, as well as the dual position of being artists and artistic directors and how this informs curatorial strategies, institutional structures, and approaches to running an art institution.

Rather than arriving at conclusions, the Deep Publishing session, created by Benjamin Åbäke, initiated an ongoing process of reflection. As a sequential project, developed through interconnected stages, with Simian sifting through the materials, conversations, and associations generated at each stage and carrying them into the next.

The spatial iteration continues this process through a video and a kinetic object that occupy an ambiguous space between artworks, objects, and readymades, foregrounding the liminal conditions of art production within Simian. This spatial iteration is not a presentation of what emerged in the Deep Publishing session but rather continues the process from what emerged within that space to further unfold and bring it into another moment of publication in which the investigation and research is put to work - encountering space, bodies and a public. What happens here feeds back into the editorial process and the printed publication that follows.

The process forms part of PASS Experimental Publication, a publication series that treats publishing itself as part of the research process. Rather than approaching publication as the final communication of completed research, it creates different situations of making public in which research can continue to take shape and be edited through spatial, visual, and material forms and encounters. The PASS Experimental Publication process moves through three connected phases: visual editing through Deep Publishing; spatial editing through this spatial iteration; and the unfolding of the research and editorial process into a printed publication for distribution.

A talk in this spatial iteration will further unfold topics emerging from the process and be transcribed for the publication. In parallel, invited writers will expand upon its various topics and associations through texts and images that will form part of the printed publication that follows.

Talk: 8 October

Join us Thursday morning for a talk and coffee with Simian and Marianne Torp, Director at Den Frie

Space: University of Copenhagen, South Campus 14.2.67A (Building 14, 2 floor, room 67A), 08:30-9:30

To follow the ongoing work of PASS Experimental Publication and other activities at PASS, you can sign up for the PASS newsletter through the PASS website and follow PASS on social media.

Next year, two other practices will be invited to engage with PASS Experimental Publication, each bringing an ongoing project into this process of collective editing, spatial thinking and publication.

The series will continue to develop through these encounters, allowing each invited practice to shape and, in turn, be shaped by the publication process.

Join us Thursday morning for a talk and coffee with Simian and Marianne Torp, Director at Den Frie.
